How to Boost Site Speed and Improve Google Ranking

Do you want your site to have long term success in the web?

Then you need to optimize the user experience quality in the web. In that website loading speed is one of the important factor.

Before a decade Google ran an experiment in their web search and found out that increasing web search latency 100 to 400 ms reduces the daily number of searches per user by 0.2% to 0.6%. Furthermore, users do fewer searches the longer they are exposed. For longer delays, the loss of searches persists for a time even after latency returns to previous levels.

Google says,
While these numbers may seem small, a daily impact of 0.5% is of real consequence at the scale of Google web search, or indeed at the scale of most Internet sites. Because the cost of slower performance increases over time and persists, we encourage site designers to think twice about adding a feature that hurts performance if the benefit of the feature is unproven.

Google in may 2020 in of their blog mentioned that they are introducing a new program called web vitals.
Web vitals is an initiative by Google to provide unified guidance for quality signals are essential to deliver a great user experience on the web.
Web vitals has a subset called as Core Web vitals which was created based on some metrics and the metrics will evolve over time .

What is metrics and why it is differing from load ?

Load is an event to measure the web performance. In another aspect load is not considering about the user needs/satisfaction in many things.
Whereas metrics considers the user needs like,

Whether the page is rendered or not.
Whether the users can engage with the rendered page or not.
Whether the navigation started successfully and if successful whether the server responded or not?
Whether user can interact with the page or not?
Whether the interaction is smooth ,free of lag , junk or not?

How metrics are measured?

Metrics are measured in two ways .
One way is In the lab. It uses tools to simulate a page load in a consistent, controlled environment
And the another One way  In the field. It measures based on real users actually loading and interacting with the page.

Metrics types:
Perceived load speed
Load responsiveness
Runtime responsiveness
Visual stability
Smoothness

Important Metrics to measure Web Performance:

From 2020 may to present Largest contentful paint (LCP),First input delay (FID) , Cumulative layout shift (CLS) are very very important metrics. But we have to work on other metrics also.
Largest contentful paint (LCP): It measures the time from when the page starts loading to when the largest text block or image element is rendered on the screen.
First input delay (FID): It measures the time from when a user first interacts with your site (i.e. based on when they click a link, tap a button, or use a custom, JavaScript-powered control) to the time when the browser is actually able to respond to that interaction.
Cumulative layout shift (CLS): It measures the cumulative score of all unexpected layout shifts that occur between when the page starts loading and when its lifecycle state changes to hidden.
First contentful paint (FCP): It measures the time from when the page starts loading to when any part of the page's content is rendered on the screen.
Time to Interactive (TTI): It measures the time from when the page starts loading to when it's visually rendered, its initial scripts (if any) have loaded, and it's capable of reliably responding to user input quickly.
Total blocking time (TBT): It measures the cumulative score of all unexpected layout shifts that occur between when the page starts loading and when its lifecycle state changes to hidden.
